Wrinkles are Beautiful

The price of experience.  Wrinkles are beautiful!  Even the Bible says so—not in those exact words. The Word of God explains that older women should teach what is good—recommend to “…younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind and to be subject to their husbands…”   (Titus 2:3-5 (NIV))  The Bible recognizes the value of good and bad experiences that may have caused the wrinkles on the handsome faces of older men and women—the price they paid in overcoming troubling and unpleasant experiences and the happiness and delight they enjoyed in good times.

Medicine and science tell us that age, sunlight, smoking and pollution, repeated facial expressions, and/or family history causes wrinkles.  They admit that among the other factors, facial expressions, frowns and smiles, form tiny grooves under the surface that eventually cause wrinkles—some are called smile and laugh lines from victories and happy times while others are frown lines resulting from tears shed, worries, and troubles.

Although our society seems to be obsessed with youth and smooth skin, it often fails to appreciate the merit of the experiences that those with wrinkles and gray hair have had throughout their lives.  Frequently, the lessons learned from those experiences are overlooked as outdated and thought to be unimportant as not relevant to the times.  To our detriment, significant lessons have been lost and cultures have been all but completely forgotten.

Responsibility  We learn from the Bible that God will never abandon us and that He can use us in His kingdom no matter the number of  wrinkles and gray hair we possess.  He can even use us if hair is but a memory to us.  Isaiah 46:4 (NIV) tells us, “Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you, I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.”  As we age, we often forget that we too have a responsibility to the end of our days—we must continue to declare God’s power to the next generation and His mighty acts to all those who come after us.  See Psalm 71:18.
