What, How and Why of Sound
Wingate takes us on an exciting journey revealing God’s gift and wisdom in daily sounds. Sounds that often retreat into the background of our busy lives. She raises our consciousness to their deeper meaning. Spiritual effects include calming at the sound of a gentle rain. They evoke awe at the crash of a violent thunderstorm. We feel joy when laughter bursts out. We also experience wonder at breath itself, which is a mark of God’s divine image (Psalm 33:6,9).
“Each breath we take comes directly from God, it is a mark of his image for no other life-form contains the breath of God.”
Wingate, 2025
Wingate focuses our attention on how to hear well—deep listening skills for words of eternal life and why we hear—directional guidance saying (see also Isaiah 30:21):
“All these commands instruct us on how to arrive at God’s best for us and to avoid stumbling into dangers he doesn’t intend for us.” (Wingate, 2025)
Who Hears Us – Sound Communication
Wingate contrasts different ways of communicating. These range from words of truth to idle chatter, from loving discipline to grumbling, and from God’s mandate to spread his Word and encourage others. Wingate also points out the Godly way to speak, not to speak, and when to listen.
What God Hears – Sound Celebration
From songs of praise, off-key notes, the time when speech fades, to the last sound to be heard on earth— the final trumpet Wingate writes:
“High and holy Jesus, I’m waiting and longing to hear the last sound that will ever be heard on earth, announcing your return. Come quickly to us.’” Wingate, 2025

This book has been such an inspiration to me! Karen has done an amazing job of leading me into the throne room of Jesus with her words, showing me how creative our Creator God is with the sense of sound, and inviting the Holy Spirit to minister to me in the quiet reflection of my reading time. I highly recommend ‘With Open Ears’ for your time with our Saviour!
