The Anxious Thought Problem

Do you have negative anxious thoughts going round and round in your mind – aka brain storms? Thoughts that you can’t rid yourself of—thoughts that seem to embed themselves deeper and deeper in your brain?

When we experience anxiety, it can trigger physical discomfort. For example: tight muscles, headaches, stomach cramps, bowel issues or high blood pressure to mention just a few.. We can all agree—this is not good for our health and well-being. Unfortunately, anxiety can result in a cyclical problem of ever increasing intensity—more anxiety/more physical issues. Our brain, like a tornado, is aswirl with negative thoughts of misery. Is there anything we can do about these brain storms?

The Anxious Thought Solution

Yes! The Bible has the answer to our problem.. These are promises, for you the child of God, and God never fails to keep his promises. But will you do your part in this process?

First Step – Requires you to Trust Him

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”

Proverbs. 3:5-6 (NIV)

Second Step – Request the Lord’s help with prayer and thanksgiving and cast this burden onto the LORD.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Phillipians 4:6-7 (NIV)

“Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken.”

Psalm 55:22 (BSB)

So you have a choice,. You DO have a tool for stopping this cyclic mess. Will you get in the way of yourself and impede your own relief? In the past, I have held onto these thoughts as if they were a lifeline? Worry, worry, worry! Keep on holding on to them, but then I had a revelation. Anxiety only hurts the self. so why not let it go and give it to God. I learnt to trust God’s Word—to pray with requests and thanksgiving to God. This requires self-control on your and my part. Work on it. Give it to God. Release that burden. Your self-inflicted misery… Exchange your worry for prayer.

Third Step – Fill your mind with beautiful positive thoughts; count your blessings one by one.

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovelyl whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about these things.”

Phillipians 4:8 (NIV)

Choose to fill your mind with positive beautiful thoughts. Do not pull back those negative tornado dog-with-a-bone type ruminations. Do it! The peace of God which is beyond our understanding settles within you. Your cycle of misery is broken. Satan’s trickery to make your mind chaotic, is stopped in its tracks. You experience a deep inner joy. This is the anchor for your soul no matter your circumstances.

Remember His timing is not always our timing. But keep on trusting! God always keeps his promises. I have also found quiet times with God, calms my mind for :

“Be still ,and know that I am God:” Psalm 46:120 (NIV)

Notes: Exercise and deep breathing also helps quell anxiety.. An excellent sermon on dealing with anxiety for a child of God is given by Joyce Myers.
