I used to struggle with the Biblical meaning of the term “wisdom.” Through ongoing study of the Word of God, this has become clear.
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom…” Proverbs 9:10 (NIV)
This means we should revere (loving awe and respect) the Lord—believe His son died for our sins and trust Him. But how do we continue to grow in wisdom? We need to pray for, desire and search for it like hidden treasure.
“Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns that gold.” Proverbs 3:13-14 (NIV)
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” James 1:5 (NIV)
Wisdom is the mental mindset that allows us to understand life from God’s perspective. It is knowing the right thing to do, from God’s teachings, and then following this guidance. It is emulating Jesus Christ.
So, what would “Refreshing Wisdom” entail? I believe there would be two aspects of this as evidenced by scripture:
- Refreshing oneself – Psalm 23:2-3 (Holman)
“He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He renews my life;
He leads me along the right paths.”
- Refreshing others – 1 Cor 16:18 (Holman)
“For they (other Christians in Paul’s time) have refreshed my spirit and yours.”
